Hopman Cup

Perth hotels

A unique event on the sporting calendar, every January Perth hosts the Hopman Cup which is a tennis tournament that has countries represented by one male and one female player.

The eight competing countries are split into two groups of four for a series of round robin matches. These comprise of a men's match, a women's match and a mixed doubles match. The top two countries from each group then meet in the final of the tournament.

The tournament is named after Harry Hopman. Hopman was a successful tennis player with many doubles titles as well as being part of an Australian team that won the Davis Cup. As a coach, Hopman led Australia to many Davis Cup victories.

The Hopman Cup is played at the Burswood Dome in Perth. The stadium is part of the Burswood Entertainment Complex that also includes a casino, hotels, restaurants, convention centre and a golf course. The Hopman Cup is an official event of the International Tennis Federation. For many tennis players, the Hopman Cup is the first event they play in January and a tournament they use to prepare for the Australian Open.

In 2011, the event was won by the USA. The other teams competing in the tournament were Serbia, Great Britain, Italy, Australia, Belgium, Kazakhstan and France. The American team featured Bethanie Mattek-Sands and John Isner. The Serbian team had Ana Ivanovic and Novak Djokovic, the Australian team had Alicia Molik and Lleyton Hewitt while the British team was Laura Robson and Andy Murray.

Some of the winners from past Hopman Cups include Roger Federer and Martina Hingis representing Switzerland, Mark Philippoussis and Jelena Dokic playing for Australia, Germany's Boris Becker and Anke Huber, James Blake and Serena Williams of the USA, Petr Korda and Jana Novotna of the Czech Republic and the first Hopman Cup went to the team of Miloslav Mecir and Helena Sukova who also represented the Czech Republic.
